Hakomi Sessions
Psychosomatic Depth Work
The Hakomi method was developed specifically to facilitate accessing the parts of you that have strong unconscious avoidant barriers. For example, as you encounter situations that come close to internalized wounds of childhood you may: Get distracted, get hyper-analytical, go numb, get very tired, get overly expressive, have intense sensations, enter into various moods, or have many other kinds of avoidant strategies. Often it goes entirely unnoticed, or gets justified and identified with: ,”thats just the way I am”... maybe.
Your unconscious is the primary navigator of your day-to-day life.
This is what Carl Jung meant when he said…
Do you recognize persistent patterns of harmful or limiting behaviors, beliefs, emotions, and states (for example: depression, confusion, or overwhelm) showing up in the realms of work, relationships, and creativity?
These unconscious “character” patterns interrupt or impair the natural growth of psychological and social functions, leaving functions truncated or distorted. Our goal is to reintegrate these wounded experiences, which, in the normal course of growth, should have occurred but didn't. The distorted beliefs that come from a child’s mind trying to make sense of the world during painful experiences can be allowed to expand and come into harmony with your whole self.
Intention
What I commit to bringing to our sessions
Stable presence and compassion
Honoring you as a unique individual.
To notice and understand your non-conscious, habitual behaviors as indicators of implicit beliefs and formative experiences, and to
To create potentially nourishing experiments that will trigger reactions, making you conscious of your unconscious shadow beliefs,
To stabilize you in mildly altered or trance states to enable healing emotional experiences that were previously extremely rare or entirely missing.
To support the integration of changes into your life
The process works best
If you can follow and report on your present experience
if you’re able to get into a calm, inward-focused state and are relaxed enough to allow reactions;
if you’re willing to experience some painful feelings and speak about them; and
if you have the courage to be open and honest about your experience.
We can also work to develop these skills and capacities throughout our time together.
This is deep psychological work, accessing the foundational beliefs and formative experiences of your character. In general, it works best with relatively consistent weekly sessions for anywhere from 2-9 months. This is a realistic time to deeply access, transmute, and integrate wounded unconscious aspects of yourself.
Active engagement with integral life practices alongside sessions can make that time frame shorter, and the transformations farther reaching.
FAQ
-
Expect a gentle and supportive environment where you will be guided to mindfully explore your present experiences and underlying unconscious patterns. The initial session often ends up being about building trust, introducing you to the method, and setting a foundation for deeper work. Sometimes we jump right in.
It all depends on what presents for you in your moment to moment experience, and what safety your unconscious needs to have confirmed in me to allow up vulnerable aspects of yourself to the surface with me.
Your unconscious is vastly intelligent, and wants to make sure I won’t hurt you in the same as you were in the past.

-
Yes, Hakomi can be very effective in dealing with emotional issues like anxiety and depression by addressing the root unconscious patterns that contribute to these states.
-
Traditional talk therapy that often focuses on cognitive understanding and discussions.
Hakomi recognizes that remaining in this cognitive realm is often a defensive strategy for people that blocks deeper access to the psyche.
Hakomi centers on bodily experiences, accessing core memories and repressed emotions in a mild trance state, brought on by sustained mindfulness and focused allowing. In these states, the sense of “being there” in as the self in the memory merges with your present experience and we can work directly with your child state of consciousness.
Cognitive understanding is used to explain context in the beginning, and used to make sense and integrate the experience at the end of a session.

The number of sessions varies widely among individuals. Some may notice shifts, or have powerful insights and healing emotional experiences within a few sessions, while others might need a longer period. It depends on the complexity of their wounding and other capacities such as mindfulness and emotional atunement, as well as their life
-
Hakomi developed alongside Somatic Experiencing, and easily incorporates it. However, depending on the nature and degree of the trauma I may refer you to someone else who specializes in that work or suggest different kinds of body therapies to do in conjunction with our work.

The state of mindfulness is a naturally occurring state. You don’t need explicit experience or practice with mindfulness or meditation, however it is essential to the methods effectiveness. So, there may be a bit more focus on mindfulness in the beginning of working together and a suggestion of meditation as “homework”.

“In my experience, the quality of a therapist is heavily dependent on the quality of their presence. From the moment I met Skyler, I felt immediately at ease, listened to, and encouraged by him. Even when he challenges me to look at aspects of my life that are painful and hard to be with, I can still sense the supportive purpose that motivates his words and draw upon that for strength.
For me, just being with Skyler is a healing act.
So, if you want someone to help you feel more connected with yourself, other people, and the world at large; if you want someone to help you become the version of yourself that you know is possible; if you want a therapist who is genuine, kind, smart, insightful, and 100% unflappably in your corner: I can’t recommend Skyler enough.”

“It was refreshing to make progress in that area that had remained stuck for so many years. I specifically noticed a lot of progress in addressing and reducing my long held beliefs that cause me to feel ashamed of myself. I have a new compassion and understanding of my behavior patterns, recognizing them as “adaptive strategies” that I formed when I was young to navigate circumstances I did not have the power to change.
Now, I feel empowered to unwind those old strategies within myself. I would recommend these sessions to anyone who wants to face their internal space honestly and make personal changes for their own betterment and the betterment of those around them. Sky held a solid container that really helped me to be able to face those parts of myself I had long avoided. With his help I found that I have nothing within myself to fear or be ashamed of.”
